Early Steps / ESDS Update

New Early Steps Progress Note Fields Coming Next Week

TheraPlan is preparing for ESDS file integration. To support the required ESDS data fields, a new accordion section will appear in applicable Early Steps progress notes.

What’s changing?

Starting next week, providers will notice an additional accordion when creating a progress note for an Early Steps child.

This new section will ask for specific information required by ESDS. The accordion will only appear when Early Steps is listed as the primary, secondary, or tertiary insurance on the patient’s case.

When it appears

The accordion appears only for patients whose case includes Early Steps as primary, secondary, or tertiary insurance.

What providers need to do

Providers should begin completing this new accordion for applicable Early Steps progress notes starting 5/1/26.

Why it matters

ESDS requires fields that were not previously part of TheraPlan progress notes. These fields are needed to support the future ESDS file integration.

Current ESDS billing status

TheraPlan is actively testing file integration with ESDS. Once approved and live, this integration is expected to allow future claims to be pulled directly from TheraPlan and imported into ESDS.

Until TheraPlan reaches the required ESDS benchmarks and receives ESSO approval, Early Steps charges cannot be brought into ESDS systematically through TheraPlan.

Action Item

Have providers complete the new accordion beginning 5/1/26

Please make sure your providers begin populating the new Early Steps accordion for applicable patients starting May 1, 2026. This information will help support future ESDS integration requirements.

Manual entry may still be required

While TheraPlan awaits ESSO approval, Early Steps notes and charges may still require manual entry into ESDS.

Providers or administrative users should continue entering April notes and any ongoing notes into ESDS manually until TheraPlan confirms the integration is live and your team has received training on the TheraPlan upload process.

TheraPlan is continuing integration work

TheraPlan is working diligently to complete testing, meet ESDS integration benchmarks, and obtain ESSO approval as quickly as possible. We will continue to provide updates as the implementation progresses.
